"Voicing" an OM Top

Here are the sounds from tapping on the 2 tops prior to shaving the braces

top 1 and top 2

and after shaping the upper braces as shown in the picture at right

I didn't take a picture at the fourth stage, but here are the sound files

and from the fifth stage (with a picture on the right)

At this point I went ahead and bent the sides and glued the neck and end blocks and kerfing, for both guitars. The blocks are Honduran Mahogany and the kerfing is Spanish Cedar aka "Cedro". To the left are the tops with the sides resting on them prior to fitting. The leftmost one is Number 1.

On the right is a picture of the back and sides for number 1 fitted. The sides have been braced for stiffness with pieces of Indian Rosewood (cut from scraps from the back), the back braces have been shaped and thinned to get different tap tones over each one. The back center reinforcing strip is Honduran Mahogany and the back braces are Spanish Cedar. I was going to use Honduran Mahogany for the back braces, but the grain was so much better oriented (and straighter) in the Cedro that I had on hand. I also love the smell of it when cutting and sanding it - sort of an herbal smell. Note the notches in the sides for the top braces. I fit both the tops and backs before glueing either one to the sides.

To the left is number 1 after "closing the box".
