Mounting Hardware

Depending on circuit board and panel size, I either mount the circuit board parallel to the panel on standoffs, or at right angles using brackets with or without brackets, using #4-40 hardware as shown in the picture at right.

Top to Bottom:

  • threaded right angle brackets - Mouser part 534-621
  • threaded posts, 1.25" (Mouser part 534-8407) and 1" (mouser part 534-8405)
  • #4-40 x 3/8" Black oxide phillips pan head screws - Aarons General Store

I have also successfully used #6-32 hardware, the corresponding parts being Mouser part 534-8418 and 534-8420 for the 1" and 1.25" standoffs, respectively, Mouser part 534-4334 for the right angle brackets, and Synthesizers.com 901-100 black machine screws. This works just fine, and the screw heads are the same size as the cabinet mounting screws. However, the #4-40 screws match those used to mount the circuit boards in the Synthesizers.com modules. Also, the mounting holes on the CGS and EFM boards are sized for #4-40.

Power Connector

EFM, CGS, Tellun and Oakley circuit boards are laid out to use the MOTM-style 4-pin .156" spacing MTA headers, whereas the Synthesizers.com modules use 6-pin .1" spacing. There are 3 ways to deal with this:

  • add a MOTM (or Oakley) distribution board
  • make adapter plugs
  • make special .1" spaced headers

I make these using Bergstik 2 row right angle headers (Mouser part 649-79257-472). When cut into single rows and straightened, the leads are long enough to be bent so that they align with the holes for a MOTM style header. The leads on other headers (single row or straight) are not long enough for this.
